Fifteen future Hall of Famers played in the 1960 game in KC. My Dad took me to the game, and I was fortunate to witness the talents of Willie Mays, Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Stan Musial, Brooks Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Roger Marris, Al Kaline, Yogi Berra, Bill Mazeroski, Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio, Ted Williams, Vada Pinson, Key Boyer, Roberto Clemente, Orlando Cepeda and Minnie Minoso.
I am sure many in attendance did not appreciate what they were seeing on the field that hot July night. Many do not realize there was a 2nd All Star game that year, played 2 days later at Yankee Stadium. The National League won both games.
It’s 2012 and I was proud to join my 3 sons in Kansas City for the All Star Classic. We spent 7 hours plus on each day, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, watching the Future’s Game, the Home Run Derby and the All Star Game. My hope is that my boys will have similar memories to mine of 1960. Time will tell if we saw the same level of talent.
